How to get the best out of your soft furnishings

Furniture is placed to serve their primary purposes. However, soft furniture brings an aesthetic look to your home. Soft furniture requires maintenance to help durability. It may still be durable but will look more torn out in a few years. Below are some dos and don’ts on how to make the best out of your soft furniture.

Do's for the upholstery & cushions:

You can divide the preference of your upholstery on two factors, fabric for furniture used by the family den on the daily purposes and fabric for festive and occasional use. For the areas used by the family, fabrics such as cotton or synthetic work better and are much durable. For the festive or casual use, you can do for delicate fabrics.

Maintenance:

Soft furniture loses its shine and fabric if it is not appropriately maintained. You should use an upholstery brush attachment to vacuum your furniture once a week to remove food crumbs, dirt and dust. Also, remove the seat cushion to clean the corners or else dirt and other loose debris will build up. If you are washing your cushions, place them back in the giver when these are slight damp for a perfect fit. To maintain the durability of your soft furniture, flip them and change their position once a weak to even out the wear.

Wear a rubber glove and move your hand over the furniture in a circular motion to collect the furs in one place and then discard it. In case of stains, never rub instead blot the stains with a dry white cloth and use a good fabric stain remover.

Don'ts for the upholstery & cushions

● Avoid delicate fabrics with thread work, a lot of texture, and embroideries if you have kids and pets at home. Delicate fabrics are prone to easily worn-out look and tear.

● Harsh brushes and sunlight weaken the fabrics. Avoid hard brushes to remove stains and always position your upholstery where sun exposure is minimum for long hours.

Do's for drapes / curtains & carpets:

lways consider the amount of sunlight exposure your drapers will get while purchasing the fabric as curtain fabrics fade quickly in the exposure of harsh light. You can protect your drapes by sewing a lining of light-coloured cloth to the material. Give your lace curtain some extra body by dipping them in starch solution and then hang them while damp for a softer look.

Maintenance:

The best way to make your soft furniture adorable is to carefully read the label for washing instructions and afterwards drying and ironing as well. For example, if you have iron curtains, you always iron on the reverse side. To avoid the dust settling on the drapes, shake them lightly every evening while drawing them closer. Carpets should be vacuumed at least 4 times a week. Curtains should be cleaned once a month with a soft brush attachment and a more in-depth cleaning precisely on the top and the hems. Always wash your drapes and carpets with cold water and mild detergent.

Don'ts for drapes / curtains & carpets

● If your drapes have different fabric and lining material then do not wash with water for one of either fabric, might shrink. Get it dry cleaned.

● Do not dry machine your drapes and carpets. The tumbling motion of the dryer machine will damage the embellishments and pleats. It will also give it hard to remove creases.

● Never pull any loose threads in your carpet but clip them with scissors.

● Avoid heavy furniture with a sharp corner on the carpet that may leave a permanent dent.
